Have you been wondering what is the story behind the locally made, Reclaimed Fir Plank Tables that are featured in the store?
They are made in Vancouver by the talented owner of Union Wood Co. -Craig Pearce. He is able to customize his furniture, including but not limited to the finish, size and table legs.
Union Wood Co is an aesthetic of vintage and industrial objects. Nostalgic of the solid floors of the docks, foundries, mills and factories upon which this city was built, and the men that did it. Union Wood Co. is inspired by the simpler times of centuries past, but living in today’s modern lofts and heritage homes.
Using materials mostly reclaimed and re-purposed from salvage yards, antique stores, demolition sites and other sources, Union Wood Co. create pieces that are solid, bold, and one of a kind.
Recently Grace took a tour of Craig’s workshop- Check out the pics!

Be sure to have a read through Craigs blog- You’ll love it. I Love his new Van! Congrats on all the fabulous work Craig. Keep it Coming!

By popular demand, here is the Recipe for the yummy cake Stephanie baked for little Emmy’s 2nd Birthday Party. It’s from Martha Stewart’s Website
Helpful Hint from Stephanie: practice the icing technique on a piece of wax paper before hand!

Ruffle Tower Cake
Directions for cake
Makes one 8-inch round layer or three 6-inch round layers
- 12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature, plus more for pans
- 2 1/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
- 2 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- Zest of 1 lemon
-
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Butter an 8-by-2-inch round cake pan. Line with parchment; butter; dust with flour.
- Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl. With electric mixer, beat butter on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, 4 minutes. Add sugar; beat well. Reduce speed to medium; add eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Reduce speed to low; alternately add flour and buttermilk, starting and ending with flour. Stir in zest.
- Pour batter into pan; bake, rotating halfway through, until tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Cool in pan on rack 15 minutes. Remove; let cool completely right side up on rack.
Directions for Icing
Makes about 6 cups
- 1 pound (4 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 6 egg whites
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Beat butter with electric mixer until fluffy and pale. Transfer to small bowl.
- In double boiler over simmering water, whisk sugar and egg whites until warm and sugar is dissolved, 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to clean bowl of electric mixer; beat on high with whisk attachment until fluffy and cooled, about 10 minutes.
- Reduce mixer to medium-low; add butter a scant 1/4 cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in vanilla.
- Switch to paddle attachment; beat on lowest speed 3 to 5 minutes. Leave at room temperature if using same day. Or store airtight in refrigerator up to 3 days. Bring to room temperature; beat until smooth.
And Finally…..
Directions
- Trim bottom layers; stack on cake round, with 3/4 cup buttercream spread over top of each. Add top layer; spread 1 cup buttercream over entire cake. Refrigerate 40 minutes until firm. Tint half remaining buttercream pink.
- Place cake on rotating stand. Lay flat a 12-inch pastry bag with #103 tip. Fill half of bag from tip to top with pink buttercream, other half with white. Hold bag vertically, slot of tip perpendicular to cake; use swift back-and-forth motion 1 inch wide to make ruffle, pulling tip up side.
- Turn cake stand slowly, piping circular ruffle over top.

But shhh don’t tell them…
Darci’s Pick – Bonne Nuit Soap $2.75 ea

“This is my Mom’s fave soap from The Cross…She lives in the States and I don’t get to see her as often as I would like, so I make a point of always having a bar in the guest bath for her to use when she comes to visit and one to take back home with her! Happy Mum’s Day!”

or Ruffle Cake Plate $7.95

Mark’s Pick – ‘Gift from The Sea”’ $11.95

“This is what I gave my mom. She loved it – she had read it years ago and it was a book that HER mother had also loved. She told me that the author was also a pioneer in the green movement – many decades ago as well as being major tabloid fixture due to famous hubby. Not to mention her kidnapped, ransomed, and eventually murdered son. And then her ability to move forward from that tragedy (and the subsequent trial) was so inspirational to everyone at the time….”
Joanna’s Pick – ‘Blue Agave 11 oz Soy Candle by Linneas Lights’ $39.95

“I wanted to get my mom something nice for her home and she is very sensitive to chemicals and strong scents so I thought a soy based candle would be perfect. The cotton wick is a great feature too!”
Grace’s Pick – ‘Canadian Hutterite Travel Pillow’ $55.00

“Its a great gift for a mom that likes to travel. It is both luxurious and practical. It folds really small and fluffs up nicely. Perfect for a good night’s rest or a cat nap on route to Paris.”
