Fern Gully

25 Oct 2011 | News

Post by Elisha

Raccoons, Owls, Bucks and Butterflies… recent home décor is occupied by the rainforest saving creatures of Fern Gully. Personally, I am weak to their undeniable appeal. My recent favorite items here at The Cross are crawly, fluffy and horned.   Whether it’s the ultimate in soft for a new baby, the light for a romantic evening, a unique center piece or a place to hang your jewels, there will always be place for a hoot or a howl.

Do you ‘Pin’?

15 Oct 2011 | News

Post By: Megan

I'm moving into a (fabulous) new apartment on November 1st. It's a tiny little 'shoebox' but it's perfect and most importantly… ALL MINE! This has left me scouring the internet for clever ideas for decorating a small space. Pinterest has become my BEST friend. If you're not on it already… you should be. It's an image sharing website that is set up like virtual pin boards where creative minds can share and save what inspires them. The best part is, you get to choose whos boards you want to follow.

Creativity with Conscience

23 Sep 2011 | News

We recycle waste daily, try and use non toxic cleaning supplies, and some of us even compost!  Why dont we try and translate this clean, green way of thinking into clean, green home decor?

There are so many ways in which we can make smarter choices when furnishing our homes.

Why not start with our floors? Reclaimed wood flooring or naturally salvaged wood  is a great option.  It looks gorgeous, so no sacrifice there.  Check out www.GreenworksBuildingSupply.com for more info!!

Another good way to keep our homes a little less toxic is to use a zero VOC paint.  Check out www.YOLOColorhouse.com.  They have a beautiful range of colors!!!
Fireclay tiles are a beautiful option for a kitchen or bathroom backsplash… using recycled content and  a sustainable manufacturing process why wouldn't you…. how pretty!
When choosing furniture, why not upcycle a piece you already own.  If you are reupholstering a chair for example…use beautiful vintage fabrics, or check out John Robshaw Textiles.  He uses ancient Indian printing techniques for all his textiles and works as a consultant for Aid to Artisans, a non profit organization dedicated to creating economic opportunities for artisans in developing countries !!
Reclaimed wood used in furniture construction is another great option.  Check out the beautiful dining tables below! LOVE!
These rugs would add a pop of color and texture to any space- they are reclaimed Turkish rugs that have been overdyed, rather than tossed out :)
Plant Something!!! I love this…. if you have a patio why not block out your annoying ;) neighbours with a plant wall… or if you do not have any out door space, modern hanging planters to grow herbs etc indoors will bring a little green indoors.
Why not choose a feature lighting fixture that is locally made? Constructed with Eco- resin, a 40% pre-consumer recycled material, these beautiful fixtures will add softness and beauty to just about any space.  Available in custom sizing, color etc.  www.propellor.ca
That's all for now…. remember there are a ton of availble options for those who want to support the cause to make our world a greener happier place!

Love Jo

Design Secrets from Peter Wilds

17 Sep 2011 | News

One of our fantastic Interior Designers here at The Cross, Peter Wilds, has put together some great design advice for us! The first installment of many I hope! Thanks for the tips Peter. Keep 'em coming….

There is no need to fear gold!
It's modern, current and hot! And remember metal tones are neutrals!!
Treat it like an accent with one piece of furniture, a light fixture, fabric or accessories.
It's that simple and makes such a huge impact

A Romantic Italian getaway

08 Sep 2011 | News

Sigh…. I stumbled upon this dreamy vacation home belonging to a Danish couple looking for an escape from their everyday lives in Copenhagen. And what an escape it is! Built on top of a hill in the Northwest region of Italy called Piedmont sits this incredible Trullo House that dates back to the middle ages. Trullo Houses were generally constructed as temporary field shelters and storehouses or as permanent dwellings by small proprietors or agricultural laborers. Their golden age was the 19th century.

Doesn't it look heavenly?
