About Julie:

On most days you can find Julie surrounded by canvas, charcoal, graphite and pigments at work amidst the   controlled chaos of her atelier overlooking Kootenay Lake in Nelson BC. In search of spontaneity and freedom,   Julie paints abstracts inspired by her magnificent mountain surroundings, art & literature. Her current body of work   is very dynamic, both in it’s execution and result. It is the outcome of a series of colourful acrylic layers and   charcoal marks applied intuitively at first then with a subject in mind. Each mark, action and colour responding to   the previous one. You can often perceive the motion in each stroke conveying emotion and energy.

A forestry degree and the appeal of the mountains brought Julie from Québec to British-Columbia where she   practiced forestry since 1996. Loving the forest but longing for something more creative, she opened her own   graphic design studio in 2006. A self-taught artist, Julie began painting in 2009 as a way to connect with something  greater, more expressive trough art and movement

Artist Statement

“Art lets me see the unseen. It grounds me while setting me free.

I paint to fulfill  an almost instinctual need to leave a mark, to alter,  to create.   I chose to work with abstracts for it   allows me spontaneity and freedom. Inspired by art, literature and the landscape, I strive to convey emotion and   energy, as if to intuitively feel and discover what surrounds us.”  - Julie Breton

Emotions is a new painting series inspired by Gustave Flaubert's novel Madame Bovary. The novel takes place in 19th century provincial France and follows Emma Bovary's adulterous life. It's publication caused quite a commotion and public prosecutors attacked the novel for obscenity. Standards concerning obscenity having changed since 1850, the novel is now considered a masterpiece. I am inspired by it for it's descriptions of the French provincial scenery, the unrealistic expectations of Emma and all the emotions the novel convey. The novel also has beautiful prose and quite a modern take on life and love. Usually I wait for a series'completion before showing it. For this one, I feel as though I have so much to work with that I decided to show the series so far.
